Fuel cost by distance and by tank
These tables use the consumption, price and currency in the calculator, so they update as you type.
Cost for 100 to 2,000 km
| Distance | Fuel | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| 100 km | 6.5 L | €11.70 |
| 250 km | 16.3 L | €29.25 |
| 500 km | 32.5 L | €58.50 |
| 1,000 km | 65.0 L | €117.00 |
| 2,000 km | 130.0 L | €234.00 |
Cost and range of a full tank
| Tank | To fill | Range |
|---|---|---|
| 40 L | €72.00 | 615 km |
| 50 L | €90.00 | 769 km |
| 60 L | €108.00 | 923 km |
| 70 L | €126.00 | 1,077 km |
Worked example: a 300 km drive
- Fuel used: 300 km × 6.5 L/100 km ÷ 100 = 19.5 liters
- Fuel cost: 19.5 liters × 1.80 = 35.10
- Cost per 100 km: 6.5 × 1.80 = 11.70
The round trip doubles it to 70.20. The 1.80 per liter is only an example, so enter the price at your station, in your own currency, for your number.
How the metric fuel cost is calculated
Fuel cost = km × L/100 km ÷ 100 × price per liter
The calculator turns every consumption unit into L/100 km first: km/L becomes 100 ÷ km/L, UK MPG becomes 282.481 ÷ UK MPG, and US MPG becomes 235.215 ÷ US MPG. Distances in miles are converted with 1 mile = 1.609344 km. A UK gallon is 4.54609 liters and a US gallon is 3.785411784 liters, which is why the two MPG figures differ for the same car.
Cedrick Reese added the metric version after years of driving in Europe, from Poland to Italy, where the questions are the same but the numbers come in liters, kilometers and euros. It uses the same formula as the site's main calculator, with exact conversion factors for kilometers and both kinds of gallon, and each result is checked against the 300 km worked example above. The currency is only a symbol: the page doesn't convert currencies or publish fuel prices. The car picker fills in US EPA ratings, converted to your chosen unit, and is rebuilt from the fueleconomy.gov dataset whenever it's refreshed.
Metric fuel cost questions
How do I calculate fuel cost per km?
Multiply your L/100 km figure by the price per liter, then divide by 100. A car using 6.5 L/100 km with fuel at an example price of 1.80 a liter spends about 0.117 per km, or 11.70 per 100 km.
How do I work out the fuel cost of a trip in liters?
Multiply the distance in km by your L/100 km and divide by 100 to get the liters, then multiply by the price per liter. A 300 km drive at 6.5 L/100 km uses 19.5 liters, which costs 35.10 at an example price of 1.80 a liter.
How do I convert L/100 km to km/L?
Divide 100 by the L/100 km figure. 6.5 L/100 km is about 15.4 km/L, and the same sum works the other way: 100 ÷ 15.4 km/L is about 6.5 L/100 km. With L/100 km lower is better, while with km/L higher is better.
What is the difference between UK MPG and US MPG?
A UK (imperial) gallon is 4.54609 liters and a US gallon is 3.785411784 liters, so the same car shows a higher MPG in UK figures. Multiply US MPG by about 1.201 to get UK MPG. To get L/100 km, divide 282.481 by UK MPG or 235.215 by US MPG.
Does this calculator work in my currency?
Yes. The math is the same in any currency, so enter the price per liter you pay and pick the symbol you want to see. The calculator doesn't convert between currencies or look up local prices.
